Boys Score: Lake - 105; Bremerton - 39
Girls Score: Lake - 119 Bremerton - 23
On a very cold day at Lake Stevens High School the Vikings 2001 Track and Field campaign opened Bremerton allowing the Vikings to begin their march towards the State meet in May. On a day where the weather was cold and the skys were dark the Vikings boys team lit up the track and the field showing why they are on a mission to win a State Championship. Led by the trio of seniors Matt Williams, Nik Williams and Ryan McKinney the boys team ran away with the victory. Nationally ranked Ryan McKinney started the day off winning the 110 hurdles in 14.8 and then later in the day scorched a 39.7 in the 300 hurdles to go with a 2nd place finish in the Long Jump. Teammate Matt Williams also had a good opening day in the sprints finishing the 100 and 200 in 11.2 and 23.2 respectively. Matt also won the long jump pushing a head wind with a jump of 20'4". Twin brother Nik Williams showed why he is one of the top sprinters in the state. The returning 400 meter state champion won all three sprints running 11.0, 22.8 and then cruised to a leisurely 51.4. Kevin Hutchinson also turned in a solid performance in the 300 hurdles and then ran a solid leg on the 4x400 relay team. In the field Mike Johnson and Chris Laplante took the shot put with puts of 51'7 and 51'1. Johnson also won the Discus with a PR 148'5" toss.
On the girls side the Vikings were lead by it's senior sprinter Tanya Pater and fellow senior Kelly Bay. Pater has shown good form early in the indoor season and carried that over into the outdoor campaign. Tanya ran a solid 12.0 in the 100 meters, ran 2 outstanding anchor legs and topped it off with an easy 26.3 in the 200 meters. Tanya also in the previous week on 50/60 day completed a 400 with between 3 and 4 seconds left on the clock of her alloted 60. Friday's meet also saw the return of Kelly Bay to the Lake Stevens Track and Field team. After spending her Junior year playing tennis, Kelly has returned to the track and has picked up right where she left off. Kelly had a great day in the relay's and a PR in the Triple Jump where she popped a 35' 1/2" jump. Kelly also threw the Javelin just under 100' for the first time in almost 2 years. Sophomore throwr Maisie Todd also showed early signs of greatness. In the Shot Maisie put 34'10" and then came back and threw a PR 110'10". The previoius week in an intersquad meet Maisie had thrown 116'0". Freshman throwers, Mallory Laplante, Kelly Foster and Jessica Molstre also had outstanding first meets. Deanna Cooper opened in her first ever meet in the Javelin over 90 feet and sophomore long jumpers Lori Anderson and Lindsey Barnes opened a new season with a new event for both and went first and third respectively. State qualifier Amy Kruckeberg sailed over 5'2" in the high jump and just narrowly missed with a slight brush at 5'4".

Lynnwood Dual- Return To Top
BOYS FINAL SCORE: Lake 113; Lynnwood 23
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: Lake 120; Lynnwood 25
It was another miserable day for track and field in the Pacific Northwest, but the Vikings put their best foot forward as they took on Lynnwood in a league dual competition. Temperatures for the meet were in the low 40's with rain and gusting swirling wind that one minute was a tail wind and the next second it was blowing straight in you face. Through it all however, the Vikings competed well and came away with another victory. In the boys competition it was business as usual with the Viking mainstays competing solidly in adverse conditions. Of note was a PR in the Triple Jump by Kevin Hutchinson (40'11"), David Johnson in the Long Jump (19'0"; 200 meters 23.8) and Ryan McKinney tried his hand at the Javelin and threw 145'3".
On the girls side it actually turned out to be a breakout day for several individuals, especially the underclassman. The highlight of the day was Malea Russum's SCHOOL RECORD in the Pole Vault with a vault of 9'6". Also performing extremely well were Maisie Todd in the Discus (113'9"), freshman Kelly Foster in the Shot Put (34'9") and Freshman Mallory Laplante who set a new freshman record in the Discus with a throw of 110'11". In what was supposed to be the race of the day Tanya Pater had been building toward a match up with 3rd place at state Sarah Owen in the 400, but Owen opted out of the race and chose to run the 800 instead. Amy Kruckeberg returned to competition after sitting out last week due to an injury and jumped 5'2" in the high jump. Sophomore Lindsey Barnes ran a quality 300 hurdle race and then won the Long Jump with a PR of 15'3". Alicia Steinruck returned in her second meet back and ran solid races in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and then won the Javelin.

Pasco Invitational- Return To Top
LAKE PLACES 2ND IN THE BOYS AT PASCO!!
GIRLS PLACE 6TH AT PASCO!!
In what is by far and away the best ever team placing at Pasco for Lake Stevens High School, the Vikings competed like the true champions they are and let the rest of the state know that we are in the hunt. With several key performances on both the boys and girls side, the Vikings rolled up the points and took away several overall and "AAA" state leads. Led by senior senior standouts Ryan McKinney, Tanya Pater, Nik Williams and Matt Williams, the Vikings won 2 events and placed second in three others.
Senior Tanya Pater had her best Pasco meet by comiin away with 2nd place plaques. Entering the meet Tanya was set on winning both the 100 and 200 but it wasn't to be. However, Tanya ran great races, especially in the 200 where she beat fellow 3A rival Ginnie Powell but was nipped at the line by Heather Hetzer from Kamiak. Tanya's time of 25.07 (24.9) is .2 off her personal record. Tanya also anchored the 4x200 relay to a 7th place finish by running the Vikings into second place in their heat by going from 6th to 2nd.
Senior Ryan McKinney had a great day in the hurdles and then anchored the meet winning 4x400 relay team. In the high hurdles it was a stacked field with the McKinney, Aaron Wells, Shelton Sampson and Darion Powell in the field. McKinney placed second .09 behind Wells. In the 300 hurdles however, McKinney ran an outstanding race and came away with the win running 38.85. In the 4x400 his anchor leg of 49.0 was enough to hold of Curtis.
Matt Williams also was a member of the 1st place 4x400 relay team. He also placed 5th in the Long Jump, 15th in the 100 at 11.33 and 20th in the 200 at 23.00.
Kelly Bay placed 7th in the Triple Jump at 35'9 1/2" and ran lead off on the 4x200.
Chris Laplante placed 8th in the Shot Put with 51' 1/2".
Clint Cooper placed 15th in the High Jump at 6'0".
