GIRLS FINAL SCORE: Lake 94.5; S. Whidbey 51; Shorewood 34.4
The Lake Stevens Track and Field team opened the 1998 season with a bang, beating the South Whidbey Falcons and newcomer Shorewood in a triangular meet at South Whidbey in both boys and girls meets. Weather conditions were good with the temperature about 60. On the boys side, Senior Ben Haynes started the barrage with a time of 11.4 in the 100 meters and followed that with a 23.2 in the 200 meters. Junior sprinter Brent Sanders in the 400 meters clocked in with a time of 54.8 into a very stiff head wind. Junior Distance phenom Kevin Galloway won the 1600 in 4:33.5 and Sophomore Brian Graham took only one jump due to injury but opened with 41'4 in the Triple Jump. On the ladies side the most impressive mark of the day was turned in by Junior Nicole Robinson in the 800. Coming off a solid season in '96, Nicole picked up where she left off with her first race of the season clocking in at 2:24.9. Senior Kayla Russum won the Javelin with a toss of 119'2. The Vikings are a young team with a lot of talent in the wings. Several key freshman were hurt and unable to compete. Most noticibly freshman sensation Tanya Pater whose 8th grade marks of 12.8 and 16'0 will be welcomed additions. With the upper classmen leading the way, the younger Vikings filled in the ranks showing good marks and great promise for the rest of the season.

Arlington, Meadowdale Triangular- Return To Top
BOYS FINAL SCORE: Lake -100.5; Meadowdale - 47; Arlington - 27.5
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: Lake - 86; Arlington - 60; Meadowdale - 43
The Lake Stevens Track teams opened their home track season with a triangular which included WESCO AAA south opponent Meadowdale and North league counterpart Arlington. With the Vikings looking to improve of a lackluster performance against South Whidbey the week before, Lake began to show a few signs of life especially in the boys meet.
Senior Ben Haynes started the barrage clocking in with an 11.2 in the 100 meters in a nasty cold wet rain storm that lasted the entire meet. Kevin Galloway continued to look impressive in various distance races running a leisurely 2:03 and Sophomore Brian Graham continued to impove in the Triple Jump while being hampered by a painful back injury. Being only allowed one jump in both the long and triple, he put up marks of 19'4" and 41'2", both in the same nasty conditions.
The lady Vikings continued to try and find their stride while missing key performers due to injuries. The Vikings have been without the services of 100 Hurdler Monica Thompson and Freshman sensation Tanya Pater in the sprints and Long Jump. The combination of missing key people and horrible weather made for a rather grey day for the girls on the track and in the field. However, they were able to continue their league unbeaten streak into the first two meets of it's 4th year.

Monroe Dual- Return To Top
BOYS FINAL SCORE: Lake 108; Monroe 36
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: Lake 122; Monroe 19
With spring break on the horizon the Viking Track and Field teams took the longboats into battle and competed with a vengence. Posting a combined score or 230-55 the Vikings will head into spring break with many positives to reflect upon. This was the second home meet for the Vikings in as many weeks, and they took full advantage of the familiar surroundings and dry weather (for a change!)
On the boys side, Lake was without the services of ace sprinter Ben Haynes who was unable to compete due to illness. However that did little to slow down the boys team as they rolled to an impressive victory. The Vikings were lead by their distance standout Kevin Galloway who again came through in impressive fashion. Kevin ran a 4:27.8 in the 1600 meters beating monroe rival Ian Johnson in skillful and tactical race. Another outstanding performance for the Vikings took place in the pole vault where Joe Mathias re-started the 13 foot club with a great clearance at 13-0 and a fantom miss at 13-7 (school record). WESCO vaulters should beware of the new face in the pole vault.
On the ladies side, they continue to get better with the addition of the fantastic freshman Tanya Pater. Making an immediate impact, Tanya won the 100 meters in 13.0 for her first race of the year due to injury, and ran anchor on the 4x100 and 4x200. Tanya also place 2nd in the long jump, just fouling a 17-0 jump. Senior Kayla Russum continued to be impressive in the Javelin with a throw of 123-6 and Sarah Miller completed a rare 800, 1600, 3200 meter triple posting times of 2:31; 5:37 and 11:54 respectfully.

Lynnwood Dual- Return To Top
BOYS FINAL SCORE: Lake 113; Lynnwood 23
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: Lake 120; Lynnwood 25
It was another miserable day for track and field in the Pacific Northwest, but the Vikings put their best foot forward as they took on Lynnwood in a league dual competition. Temperatures for the meet were in the low 40's with rain and gusting swirling wind that one minute was a tail wind and the next second it was blowing straight in you face. Through it all however, the Vikings competed well and came away with another victory. In the boys competition it was business as usual with the Viking mainstays competing solidly in adverse conditions. Of note was a PR in the Triple Jump by Kevin Hutchinson (40'11"), David Johnson in the Long Jump (19'0"; 200 meters 23.8) and Ryan McKinney tried his hand at the Javelin and threw 145'3".
On the girls side it actually turned out to be a breakout day for several individuals, especially the underclassman. The highlight of the day was Malea Russum's SCHOOL RECORD in the Pole Vault with a vault of 9'6". Also performing extremely well were Maisie Todd in the Discus (113'9"), freshman Kelly Foster in the Shot Put (34'9") and Freshman Mallory Laplante who set a new freshman record in the Discus with a throw of 110'11". In what was supposed to be the race of the day Tanya Pater had been building toward a match up with 3rd place at state Sarah Owen in the 400, but Owen opted out of the race and chose to run the 800 instead. Amy Kruckeberg returned to competition after sitting out last week due to an injury and jumped 5'2" in the high jump. Sophomore Lindsey Barnes ran a quality 300 hurdle race and then won the Long Jump with a PR of 15'3". Alicia Steinruck returned in her second meet back and ran solid races in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and then won the Javelin.
