Monroe Dual - Return To Top

BOYS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-72, MONROE-54
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-112, MONROE-21

The Lake Stevens Track and Field team opened the 1997 season with a bang, beating the Monroe Bearcats in both boys and girls meets. Weather conditions were average with the temperature in the mid 50's, with a stiff head wind. Several Viking athletes took full advantage of the first day without rain in two weeks and came away with impressive marks this early in the season. On the boys side, Senior Brian Trimble started the barrage with a time of 4:41 in the 1600 meters and followed that with a 2:02 in the 800 meters. Junior sprinter Ben Haynes in the 100 meters clocked in with a time of 11.5 into a very stiff head wind. On the ladies side the most impressive mark of the day was turned in by Senior Sarah Duncan in the Long Jump. Coming off a 2nd place state finish in '96, Duncan picked up where she left off with her first jump of the season marking at 17'6 3/4. Fellow Senior Allison Sanders was a quadruple winner, taking first in the 100 meters, 300 meter hurdles, 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay. Lynnwood Dual- Return To Top

BOYS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-97, Lynnwood-47
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-118, Lynnwood-19

March 27, 1997 will go down as one of the greatest days in the history of Lake Stevens boys track and field. For it was on that day they finally overcame the Lynnwood Royals and broke their hold of dominance over the WESCO AA. In a spectacular performance by all involved, the Vikings ended Lynnwood's 56 dual meet winning streak by a score of 97-47. "It feels real good," head coach Jeff Page said. "The kids really competed well, way better than I thought we were capable of. There is no way I would have believed that we would win 14 of 17 events if someone had asked me beforehand." And that's just what the Vikings did, win 14 out of 17 events, losing only one race on the track (3200 meters). Once again it was the Seniors who set the tone for the Vikings. Seniors Rian Cool and Brian Trimble both had days to remember. Cool winning both hurdle races and Trimble for his tenacity in winning the 800, 1600 and anchoring the 1600 meter relay. Across the board the Vikings were the dominant team picking up numerous 2nd and thirds in addition to their hold on the first place finishes. In what was described as the "finish of the day", Sophomore standout Keving Galloway dug deep coming down the homestretch of the 1600 meter run and out sprinted Lynnwood's Randy Revor to the finish for a crushing 1-2 finish for Lake Stevens. Another turning point in the meet was in the High Jump when Senior Steve Pipe, in his first meet since 8th grade, won the high jump causing a 7 point swing in favor of the Vikings. Additional double winners for the Vikings were: Ben Haynes in the 100 and 200 meters and Terry Weigelt in both the Javelin and Discus.

In what has become a common occurance the ladies rolled to another victory. In a meet of complete domination the Vikings won 15 of 17 events to win 118-19. Senior Sarah Duncan led the way with four victories (100, Jav, LJ, 4x200). Sarah Miller, Rochelle Weigelt, Kalee Craig, Megan Romo and Alli Sanders all had part in two victories for the Vikings as they improved their season record to 2-0. Alli Sanders also began a new event in the 100 hurdles, showing great promise for the remainder of the year. Junior Kayla Russum was a first time scorer for the Vikings in her second track meet ever, throwing the Javelin 94-2, good enough for a thrird place finish. Freshman Lacey Leavitt won her 2nd 400 in as many weeks with a PR in front of a very vocal crowd. Christine Graham also posted her second victory with a respectable 33-7 in the Triple Jump. The ladies are riding a winning streak of their own, having only lost one dual meet in the past 5 years, and are looking to continue the trend.

The Vikings will travel to Wenatchee on Saturday, March, 29th for the Ray Cockrum Relays.

Cedarcrest, Arlington Triangular - Return To Top

BOYS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-79, Arlington-51, Cedarcrest-44
GIRLS FINAL SCORE: LAKE-100, Arlington-70, Cedarcrest-2

For the 3rd dual meet in a row, the Lake Stevens Vikings track team showed why they are becoming the odds on favorite to win the WESCO titles on both the boys and girls side. The boys prevailed in a tightly contested meet over vastly improved Arlington and Cedarcrest squads, while the girls rang the century bell for the third dual meet this season.

If the girls team is showing any signs of slowing they are hard to find. Even in a week where all athletes were not involved, the girls team still rolled onto victory. As usual the strength of this team lies in its senior leadership. After missing the previous meet due to spring break, seniors Sarah Duncan and Sarah Miller re-entered competition with a vengence. Duncan returned with 1st places in the 100, javelin, long jump and 4x200 relay while Miller won both the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Freshman Kelli Cronin continues to improve in the 3200 meter run giving Lake solid points in an attempt to free up Sarah Miller. The outstanding hurdle trio of Thompson, Sanders and Romo continue to dominate opponents in the hurdles, placing 1-2-3 in both races. Sophomore Roechelle Weigelt and freshman Tiffany Mauer show steady improvement in the shot while junior transfer Kayla Russum in only her 3rd meet ever is challenging the 100 foot barrier in the javelin. In their three league meets this year, the girls team has outscored their opponents 325-112.

Unlike the girls meet, the boys were in a tight one for most of the afternoon before distancing themselves. Senior Travis Hansen was a double winner for the Vikings winning both the 110 high hurdles and running a leg on the 4x400 relay team. He narrowly missed a third victory except for catching the final hurdle of the 300's sending him to the track and an eventual 4th place finish. Terry Weigelt was a double throw winner in the javelin and discus. Junior Joe Mathias also soared to new heights in the javelin throwing a PR of 159-11 to take 2nd place. However, a groin injury kept him sidelined in the vault where he was looking to make a run at another PR. Senior distance superman, Brian Trimble won the 400 in 50.9 then doubled back in the 800 15 minutes later and placed second with 2:03. As of April 14, Lake has 2 athletes under 2:02 in the 800 with a third pushing his way towards the group. Freshman Brian Graham and sophomore Cameron Baron are building on a good 1st few weeks in the jumps, each improving in the triple jump with new PR's.

The Vikings will travel to Stanwood for a triangular with host Stanwood and Jackson on Thursday, April 17th. and then will be sending several outstanding individual performers to the Pasco Invitational on Saturday, April 19th. The Vikings will be looking to test their metal against some of the best competition in the entire northwest.
