SAFETY / HEALTH
ACCIDENTS AND
INSURANCE
All students are strongly encouraged to have insurance coverage while at
school and/or participating in school related events. All students participating in interscholastic
athletics are required to have insurance prior to their first turnout. If a student is injured at school or during a
school sponsored activity, he/she must make a report of the accident to the
office. Accident insurance to cover all
school activities may be purchased through the school. There is some variation in the cost of
insurance depending on the sports involved. Students are urged to take advantage of this insurance unless the family
has insurance at home which will cover them.
FIRE / EARTHQUAKE /
LOCKDOWN DRILLS
Fire and earthquake drills at regular intervals are required by law and
are an important safety precaution. It
is essential that when the first signal is given, everyone obeys orders
promptly and clears the building by the prescribed route as quickly as
possible. The teacher in each classroom
will give the students instructions.
HEALTH CENTER SERVICE
If a student becomes ill at school, he/she is to report to the health
center with a pass from his/her teacher.
A decision as to what should be done concerning the illness will be
made. If assigned to the Health Center,
the student must sign in and out with an office secretary. Stays in the Health Center
in excess of 30 minutes must have administrative approval. Excessive use of the Health Center
by students will necessitate a parent conference to determine needed medical
attention. A school nurse is available
for discussing individual health problems with students. The Health Center
is the only authorized area for ill students.
The student will be considered truant if when ill and out of class
he/she does not report to the Health
Center. Cots, bathrooms, medical supplies and
part-time nursing care are all available in the Health Center.
MEDICATION
Lake Stevens
High School
students may not self-medicate. Students may have access to their medication in
the nurse’s office to be administered by designated personnel, usually the
school nurse. Chronic long term
medication, prescription or over the counter, needs to be administered through
the nurse’s office. If medication needs
to be administered by school personnel, a written, current and unexpired
request from a licensed physician or dentist must accompany the
medication. Such request shall state
that it is necessary for the school to administer medication to the student to
permit the student to attend school. In
a situation when parent, physician, principal and school nurse believe it is in
the best interest of the student to carry medication, the medication is to be
accompanied by written permission from the parent indicating the name and
dosage of the medication and the dates and times to be administered, needing to
follow the LSHS medicine taking protocol. It is the responsibility of the parent to inform the principal or school
nurse, in writing that the child will be self-medicating. Students may carry a one day dose of short
term over the counter medication for self medication as long as it is
accompanied by a parental note. A
violation of this privilege may result in disciplinary action.
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
A memorandum of
understanding exists between the Lake
Stevens School
District
and the Lake Stevens Police
Department. The following incidents will
be reported to the police: Fights, arson, assault, bomb threats, burglary,
dangerous weapons violations, disturbances, explosives, extortion, harassment,
blackmail, coercion, forgery, tampering with fire apparatus or alarms, theft,
destruction of property, robbery, sale, use or possession of tobacco, alcohol,
drug and/or criminal trespass. This list
is not limited in scope.
SCHOOL CLIMATE
A school building is not a
school until it is occupied by students. When a building becomes a school, it takes on a character and meaning
and expresses itself to the student body and visitors in relation to the respect
it is given by the students in its appearance and daily care. We feel it is a matter of personal and school
pride that each and every student makes a commitment to do everything possible
so that the appearance of our school and grounds expresses a positive message
for everyone. This commitment includes
using a common sense approach. Trash
belongs in trash cans. Food is to be
eaten only in designated areas. Gum,
graffiti, and spit have no
place on the sidewalks,
floors, or walls, and the furniture and equipment in your school are for your
use and not abuse. Consequences will
range from litter detail to long term suspension for chronic repeat
offenders. Students who disfigure property, break windows, or do other damage to
school or personal property, or equipment will make restitution in addition to
being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.
