GRADING

Lake Stevens High School operates on a two-semester school year. Grades given at the end of each semester are entered as part of the permanent record. Only semester grades are used to compute grade point averages. Two interim progress reports are issued at 6-week intervals during each semester. These progress reports will indicate any need for special attention. Letter grades A, B, C, and D, are passing and earn .5 credits per semester toward graduation. A grade of P is also a passing grade and earns .5 credits toward graduation but is not acceptable to meet college entrance requirements. A grade of F does not earn credit toward graduation. An incomplete (I) at the quarter indicates that the student has not completed all of the required work. This work must be made up within a specified time or a failure grade will be recorded.  The N grade indicates no credit and does not affect the grade point average.

FAILING GRADES

a.         It is the responsibility of the student to seek additional assistance if he/she is receiving a failing grade.

b.         It is the right of the student to periodically ask his/her teacher for an evaluation of his/her academic standing and/or grade.

c.         It is the responsibility of the teacher to notify each student who is failing or is near failing his/her class in a timely manner by means of the six week progress report to allow for remediation.

d.                  Failure to notify of a potential failing grade on the six-week progress report does not necessarily mean that the teacher cannot issue the student a failing grade for the semester.  A student may receive a failing grade at the semester without prior notice on the six-week progress report provided that the teacher can demonstrate the cause for failure was due to the student's poor performance in the final six weeks.  For example, a student failing to take a final test or turn in a semester project due in the last week of the semester would fail the class.

e.                    Study Table/Saturday School are academic help systems available to students.
