ATTENDANCE (335-1570)

BELL SCHEDULES

The warning bell rings at 7:30 a.m.  Students are to be in their first period classes when the tardy bell rings at 7:35 a.m. The time between classes is five minutes.  School ends at 2:10 p.m.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Lake Stevens School District considers regular attendance to be a necessary part of student learning. It is the district's desire to instill a sense of responsibility in each student that will carry over into the world of work. Students, in concert with their parents/guardians, are responsible for establishing and maintaining prompt and regular attendance as prescribed in the compulsory Attendance Law of the State of Washington. (RCW 28A.225.020).  In accordance with this, the following procedures are adopted to ensure regular attendance.

LOSS OF CREDIT/ATTENDANCE RETRIEVAL

Students that exceed 10 absences in a semester in any class will lose credit in that class beginning with the 11th absence. This includes any accumulation of excused, and/or, unexcused absences. LSHS Attendance Retrieval policy allows students to retrieve a maximum of five absences per class for purposes of earning credit. The absences retrieved must be excused absences. Unexcused absences cannot be retrieved. On the 8th absence an 8 day letter will be sent home that has to be returned to the attendance office with a parent/guardian signature.

Definition of Terms

Absence Excused:    Any absence excused by the parent/guardian in writing.  The written note from the parent/guardian must include the date(s) of the absence and the parent/guardian signature.  (Although we appreciate phone messages indicating student absence, we will require a written note for an excused absence.)

Absence Unexcused:    Any absence not verified by a note.

Absence Information:   Ex: school related absences, field trips, athletic trips,      suspensions.

Tardies:                   Any student arriving to class without an excused legitimate note after the bell and prior to 10 minutes into the class is considered tardy.  Three unexcused tardies equals one unexcused absence.

Truancy:                   Ex: Any absence from school without parental knowledge  and/or school approval.  (3 periods or more)

Skipping:                  Ex: any absence from class without parental/teacher  knowledge and/or school approval. Skipping a class will  result in a one hour detention assignment.

Prior Permission:      All pre-arranged absences of 3 or more days must include a Prior Permission form, which is available in the attendance office.  The student is responsible for completing the form and returning it to the attendance office before the absence.  Prior Permission absences will still count toward the student's 10 total absences per semester.

Attendance Forgery: Automatically becomes unexcused absence – refer to   misconduct and exceptional misconduct section.

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS, TARDINESS, AND TRUANCY SANCTIONS

ADMIT SLIPS

Students are required to present a written excuse note from the parent/guardian to the attendance office within three (3) school days of the student’s absence, or the absence will be considered truancy or personal business. After normal business hours an answering machine will accept your calls. However, absences will not be excused on the basis of telephone calls. Students returning from an absence or suspension will be required to obtain an admit slip from the attendance office. A parent/guardian must sign absence notes.

LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY

A.                If a student has reason to leave school during the school day, he/she must             have parental permission.  This permission can be obtained with a note             from the parent bro, ught to the attendance office prior to the time of             dismissal.  If a student does not have a notehe/she must come to the             attendance office and call a parent for permission to leave the campus.             Upon returning to school, the student must bring a parent-signed note.

B.                  Students leaving school without first checking out with the attendance office may be considered truant.  Leaving school for appointments or illness during the school day requires that students sign out at the attendance office before leaving or the absence will be declared unexcused.

C.                  Students cannot be on another school’s campus during our school day unless it is for a legitimate school reason.

D.                  Any student going home ill needs to have checked out through the school  nurse’s office.

ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATION

A.        Upon the accumulation of absence number eight (8) in a class period an             eight day absence notification will be sent home.

B.        Upon the accumulation of eleven (11) absences per class, per semester,       the student will receive notice of loss of credit.  The student will still be       required to attend the class.  Failing to attend the class will result in a       change from "no credit" status to an F (failing) grade.  If a student is       failing at the time of loss of credit, a failing (F) grade will be recorded.

C.        Absenteeism due to administratively approved school sponsored activities       will not count toward loss of credit.

D.        Exclusion from school (suspension and school related absences) will not             count toward the maximum of ten (10) days of absenteeism.

TARDY POLICY:

•              TARDY 1    - Warning and Review of Tardy Policy

•              TARDY 2-6 - SANCTION - 30 MINUTES detention

•              EXCESSIVE TARDIES (7 or more) will result in an Attendance                Referral.  Students with excessive tardiness shall be assigned                administrative discipline.

DETENTION:

Detention, whether it be with a classroom teacher or an administrator, will be served either before school, after school, at lunch, or with an individual teacher. Arrangements must be made by the student to serve the detention within FIVE (5) days. TRUANCY SANCTIONS:

•Truancies may result in a detention or  Saturday School assignment.

Excessive Truancy (5 plus days) will result in a Snohomish County

Juvenile Office Referral under Becca Truancy Law

•In addition to the above stated procedures, Lake Stevens High School also abides within the    requirement of the Compulsory School Attendance Law (BECCA).  Washington State Law    requires the school to file a petition with the Snohomish County Juvenile Court no later than    the 7th day of truancy/ unexcused absences in a school month or 10 days of    truancy/unexcused absences in a school year. A day is defined as three (3) or more class    periods. Reference:  RCW 28A.225.035.

SATURDAY SCHOOL:

Saturday School may be assigned for excessive absences, tardies, and/or discipline.  It runs from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Students will be expected to study, read, do homework, research and conduct school service.  Students arriving after 8:00 will not be admitted. Failure to complete Saturday School may result in a 1-3 day suspension from school.

MAKE-UP WORK

Make-up work will be allowed if the student has received an excused absence slip from the attendance office.  If the absence is unexcused the teacher is not obligated to allow the student to make up the work. A student shall be allowed one day for each day of excused absence to make up class work, assignments, or exams missed during his/her absence.  Course procedures will contain criteria relative to when make-up work must be submitted.  When attendance is part of the grading criteria, it shall be noted in the teacher course syllabus.  WAC 180-40-235-2 allows for a student’s grade to be affected by his or her attendance and/or participation in the class.  In order to lower a student’s grade for absences or tardiness, the student’s attendance and/or participation must be related to instructional objectives or goals of the particular subject or course.
