This course places emphasis on pronunciation and vocabulary and many of
the unique aspects of French grammar. Students will learn simple conversational
patterns, basic sentence structure, and cultural elements of the French-speaking
world.

VIA 148/149 American Sign Language 1-2

American Sign Language (ASL) 1 and 2 are beginning courses in American
Sign Language, introducing students to the remarkable and complex language
of the deaf. The course will provide insights into cultural values, beliefs,
attitudes and language of the deaf community. Meaningful context, modeling,
observation and student participation are several ways the students will
achieve American Sign Language skills in a natural and direct method.
ASL 1 will be able to use basic ASL expressive and receptive skills. ASL
students completing ASL 2 will be able to converse in ASL with students
and deaf people at the beginning level.

VIA 248/ 249 American Sign Language 3-4

Prerequisite: ASL 1-2
ASL 3-4 is a continuation of ASL 1-2 with greater emphasis on ASL grammar
and concentrated effort to develop the student’s expressive and
receptive skills. The course will continue to provide insights into deaf
cultural values, attitudes and the deaf community. Every day conversational
situations will be approached via natural and direct method, demonstrations,
games, warm-ups, observation and a lot of imagination. Appropriate language,
grammar and culture behaviors that establish and maintain social relations
will be emphasized. This course will encourage small and large group activities
using exercises meaningfully related to the conversational topics.
Two years of ASL satisfies the foreign language requirement
for most Washington State colleges and universities.
