SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
All students are required to take one year of freshman
level science. Students may take Physical Science through the science
department or enroll in Principles of Technology. College bound students
should take Biology during their sophomore year, Chemistry as juniors,
and choose one of the following their senior year: Physics, AP Chemistry,
AP Biology.
Course available for cross credit to receive science credit include:
Ecology Horticulture
Marine Biology Principles of Technology
Consumer Chemistry

Grade: 9
Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: None
This course includes the use of the scientific method and application
of scientific skills in problem solving. General scientific principles
and writing are emphasized in the curriculum that includes the scientific
method, the metric system, basic introductory chemistry which includes
properties and states of matter, atomic structure, periodic table,
compound formulas and names, chemical bonding, chemical reactions,
solutions, acids and bases. This course also includes physics which
includes energy, motion, forces, work, and power. This course is typically
required for freshmen.

SCI 221 / 222 Biology 1-2
Grade: 10,11,12
Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: Physical Science 1-2 (full year)
Biology is a two (2) semester course that explores the general principles
of life. Emphasis is given to the structure and function of cells,
the concepts of heredity, and the classification of plants and animals.
Laboratory experiments are provided to emphasize the subject matter.
This class is recommended for those planning to attend college.

SCI 271 / 272 Ecology 1-2
Grade: 10,11,12
Length 1 semester each
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5
Prerequisite: Physical Science 1-2 (full year)
Ecology is an textbook oriented class that deals with the inter-relationships
between living things, dead things and non-living things in the environment.
The course covers freshwater, marine, soil, terrestrial and atmospheric
ecology units. Extensive use of a textbook will be supplemented with
outdoor educational activities. Students must be prepared to go outside.
Daily work using the textbook should be expected.

SCI 331 Marine Biology
Grade: 11,12
Length 1 semester
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5
Prerequisite: Biology with a ‘C’ or better
Marine Biology is designed for the students to look at the relationships
between marine animals in the ocean. This course involves studying
in detail the chemistry of seawater, invertebrates, marine mammals,
fish, algae, human impact on the ocean, and the laws of the sea. There
will be four dissections; shark, fish, squid, and a sea star. This
course is also designed to further your understanding of the ocean
and how it impacts the world.

SCI 323 / 324 Advanced Placement Biology 1-2
Grade: 11,12
Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: B grade in Biology 1-2
Preference: Completion of Chemistry or teacher permission
The AP Biology course is designed to be the equivalent of the general
biology course usually taken during the first college year. The completion
of the course may allow students to register in college courses where
general biology is a prerequisite, and the AP Biology course fulfills
college lab science requirements. This course will cover chemistry,
cells, cellular energetics, heredity, molecular genetics, evolution,
diversity of organisms, structure and function of plants and animals,
and ecology.

Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: Physical Science 1 - 2 with a C grade or above in Physical
Science 1-2
This is an elective course that investigates the behavior and properties
of matter. Particular attention is paid to chemical reactions, atomic
structure and laboratory work. This course is recommended for college-bound
student.

Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: Algebra 3-4 or concurrent enrollment; full year Chemistry with a C or better or instructor permisson
The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general
chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. The
completion of the course may allow students to register in college
courses where general chemistry is a prerequisite, and the AP chemistry
course fulfills college lab science requirements. The course will
cover atomic theory, chemical bonding, nuclear chemistry, gases, liquids,
solids, solutions, reactions, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics
and thermodynamics.

SCI 345 / 346 Consumer Chemistry 1-2
Grade: 11,12
Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: 4 semesters of science
Course description: Consumer chemistry is a year long science elective
course which covers chemistry topics from everyday life experiences.
General chemistry content will be covered which will enable students
to comprehend chemistry and how it applies to their lives. This course
is not intended for college bound students and does not meet minimum
college academic rigor requirements for science. Those students who
plan to go to college should take Chemistry.
