PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students are required to take Health and 1.5 credits of PE for graduation. Physical Education 1 is required of all freshmen and is prerequisite for all other PE classes. The PE program is built around weekly aerobic fitness activities to promote life-long health.

This class will cover a variety of sports and recreational activities providing the basics in skill development and rules for each sport. This required course places primary emphasis on fitness, skill development, aerobic training and FUN. You can look forward to swimming, basketball, flag football, and many more great units.
Suiting up plays a big part in student’s evaluation--so be prepared.

HPE 232 Aerobics

This class will focus on a variety of aerobic activities designed to improve the student’s cardiovascular fitness. Emphasis will be placed on individual improvement. Students will be required to participate to their full potential. Students will also be required to design a personalized aerobic program. Activities will include aerobic dance routines, aerobic exercises to music, cross-country running and aerobic games.

Students will develop a knowledge of a variety of water sports, stroke development, water safety techniques, and water fitness. Students will be required to master the various skills with each unit through drills, games, activities and testing. Written knowledge and skill tests will be required for each unit. Student should be prepared to swim daily.

HPE 244 Aquatic Fitness

This class will include a variety of aerobic activities in the water. We will do shallow water aerobics, hydrofit aerobics using ankle and hand buoys as well as some lap and interval training. We will also mix aquatic games into our curriculum throughout the semester. We will design individual fitness programs, complete body analysis activities and discuss various fitness issues. You do NOT need to be a strong swimmer to be in this class.

HPE 243 Water Safety Instructor Training

Prerequisite: PE 1
This class will prepare students to successfully teach swimming to others. Students need to be at least 17 years old, familiar with crawl stroke, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke, side stroke and be able to dive. Students may be Red Cross certified for a $10 fee.

HPE 242 Lifeguard Training

Prerequisite: PE 1, 15 years old, ability to swim 500 yards using the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke, dive from the deck, surface dive, swim underwater
This class will include all the training necessary to become a certified lifeguard. Students may receive Red Cross certification for fee of $5.00. This class will be mixed with various aquatic games such as water polo, basketball, etc.

HPE 255 Beginning Weight Training/Body Condition

This course involves three days of weight training a week and 2 days of cardiovascular training for those students who want to build a fitness base and learn how to lift weights.
Students will also learn how to set up and structure their own programs based on their individual needs and interests. A multitude of lifting methods will be introduced including plyometric circuits, power lifting basics, and an introduction to the Olympic lifts.

HPE 256 Advanced Weight Training

Prerequisite: PE 1, Weight Training
Power lifting for the serious weight trainer! Emphasis will be placed on methods of improving specific strength and fitness through the use of the Olympic Lifts and traditional weight training exercises.

Students will participate in planned weight lifting as well as aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Units will include circuit training, lifting for speed, strength, power, endurance and flexibility, building mass and strength while decreasing body fat percentage and reducing injuries. Nutrition will also be addressed.

This class is for the serious student-athlete who desires a strength and conditioning program tailored to a specific athletic need. Individualized workout plans will be developed to help students develop both the physical and mental aspects of training and conditioning. Student athletes must be very self motivated and be prepared for very intensive training. Instructor permission is required.

HPE 321 Sports Medicine/Athletic Training
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period +180 hours after school
Credits: 2.0 (1.0 for class and 1.0 for after-school hours)
Prerequisite: Enjoy sports and watching sports activities
This class involves daily classroom instruction and 180 hours of lab/practical experience. Main topics covered are anatomy and physiology of the body, prevention, evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries. Fitness, nutrition, exercise, physiology, psychology of sports injuries, job finding skills, and health related careers will also be covered.
Each student will also be certified in American Red Cross Community First Aid which includes child, infant and adult CPR. Labs will consist of hands-on skills such as taping, wrapping, splinting, bracing and emergency procedures. The 180 hours after school will be supervised clinical application in the area of athletic training. Students will help with game preparation, injury care, and basic injury rehabilitation. Time will be scheduled with the instructor.

HPE 421 / HPE 422 Sports Medicine Advanced 1-2

Prerequisite: C+ or better in Sports Medicine
Students will do a more in-depth study on evaluation of sports injury, rehabilitation exercises and equipment, tissue healing, modalities, sports nutrition, and advanced first aid. Students will be required to complete 180 hours of lab time after school and at various sporting events. In addition, students will be involved in internships at local therapy clinics. Journaling and record keeping will be an integral part of the internship. This class is a good introduction for students interested in a career in the medical field.
