MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
Students must complete a minimum of two (2) credits
of mathematics in order to graduate from LSHS. Students who will be
applying to a four year college must complete three or more credits,
including successful completion of at least Algebra 3-4. (1 semester
= .5 credits) The sequence of available courses is as follows:
MTH 120 Pre-WASL Math
Grade: 9,10
Length: 1 semesters
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5
Students will be enrolled in this course if they fail the7th-grade WASL for Math. Their 7th-grade scores will be analyzed to determine what strands they were unable to successfully master and an individual ized program will be created for them to help them succeed on the WASL.

MTH 130 Post-WASL Math
Grade: 11,12
Length: 1 semesters
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5
Students will be enrolled in this course if they fail the10th-grade WASL for Math. Their 10th-grade scores will be analyzed to determine what strands they were unable to successfully master and an individual ized program will be created for them to help them succeed on the WASL.

MTH 127 / 128 Basic Algebra 1-2
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length: 2 semesters
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisites: None
This 2 semester course is intended as a preparatory class for students
not yet ready for Algebra 1. The course emphasizes basic operations
on whole numbers, decimals, and fractions using both positive and
negative integers. Applications from these areas involve percents
and solving equations with an emphasis on basic geometry and statistical
concepts in the second semester.

MTH 121 / 122 Algebra 1-2
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
This course makes the transition from arithmetic to algebra by developing
an understanding of an ability to use mathematical concepts, principles
and processes. The number system (with literal and signed numbers),
fundamental operations, linear equations, special products and factoring,
fractions and fractional equations, and powers and roots constitute
the core of the course. The primary objectives of the course are to
increase the student’s ability to solve problems and to familiarize
them with mathematical symbolism in preparation for higher math.

MTH 213 / 214 Consumer Math 1-2
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length: 1 semester each
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
This course provides students an opportunity to review and refine
their basic math skills. Students will apply these math skills in
a variety of business and personal-use areas including payroll, banking,
loans, credit cards, discounts, auto and housing costs and taxes.
Calculators are used for a majority of the work, and students will
need to bring one to class each day to complete class work and homework
assignments.

MTH 231 / 232 Geometry 1-2
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or better grade in Algebra 1-2
This course offers information about geometric figures in the plane
and in space. The study of points, lines, polygons, circles, planes
and their various relationships form the basic core of the course.
Certain material of solid geometry is offered along with the analogous
content of plane geometry. The objectives of this course include the
development of the concepts of spatial relations and spatial perception
and the development of an understanding of deductive method as a way
of thinking.

MTH 281 / 282 Geometry Honors 1-2
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: A or B grade in Algebra 2
This fast paced class will cover geometric figures in
the plane and in space. The study of points, lines, polygons, circles,
planes and their various relationships form the basic core of the
course

MTH 323 / 324 Algebra 3-4
Grade: 10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or better grade in Geometry 1-2
This course begins with a comprehensive review of Algebra
1-2. The scope is broader, the approach more mature, and the structure
of algebra receives much more attention. Inequalities, systems of
equations and work problems, irrational numbers, conics, functions,
graphs, variation, exponents and logarithms, polynomials, sequences
and coordinate geometry and trigonometry are studied.

MTH 351 / 352 Math Analysis 1-2
Grade: 11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credit: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or above in Algebra 3-4
This course introduces the student to standard concepts and language
needed for a beginning mathematics course in college. Intermediate
algebra, analytic geometry, and trigonometry are combined with other
important concepts by an approach that stresses functions. Special
emphasis is placed on conics, circular, trigonometric, polynomial,
and transcendental functions. Also, a discussion of rational and irrational
numbers provides an introduction to the important concept of limits
used in the second semester.
The second semester examines the graphing of functions, finding upper
and lower bounds, and sequences all hinging on the idea of limits.
A chapter on series and sequences introduces the final three chapters
of limits of functions, rates of change, and integrals in which some
basic concepts of calculus are considered

MTH 361 / 362 AP Calculus AB
Grade: 10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credit: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or better grade in Math Analysis 2
This course is intended for students who have successfully completed
high school math courses through Math Analysis 1-2 and is presented
with the goal of preparing students to take the AP exam, although
that is not required as part of the course. AP Calculus is primarily
concerned with the development of student’s understanding of
the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its applications
and methods.
The course emphasizes a multi-representational approach
to calculus, with concepts, results and problems being expressed geometrically,
numerically, analytically and verbally. The connections among these
representations are also important. Technology (graphing calculators)
is used regularly by students. Teachers confirm and reinforce the
relationships among the multiple representations.

MTH 363/364AP Calculus BC
Grade: 10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credit: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or better grade in Math Analysis 2
This Course is designed to prepare students for the AP Calculus BC exam. Most colleges offer credit for successful completion of the AP Calculus AB exam with a score of three or higher, but certain colleges will only accept the Calculus BC exam for credit. Check with the college you intend to attend for more information about which test they will accept.
Students in this course will complete all of the course work of AP Calculus AB and will use the same text. Additional topics will be covered on the BC exam, which are not covered on the AB exam, so this course will progress through the material more quickly than the AB course. This course is intended for the serious student, and for a student considering an engineering career.

MTH 365 / 366 Advanced Placement Statistics 1-2
Grade: 10,11,12
Length: 1 year
Block of Time: 1 period
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: C or better in Math Analysis
This course is intended for students who have successfully completed
high school math courses through Algebra 3-4 and is presented with
the goal of preparing students to take the AP exams, although that
is not a required part of the course. This course is concerned with
the development of students’ understanding of the concepts of
statistics and providing them experience with statistical methodology
and its applications.
