The following brief descriptions of the course offerings at Lake Stevens High School are provided to assist you in selecting your courses wisely. FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

All Family and Consumer Science classes except Family Health will satisfy the "Occupational" requirement for graduation. Family Health is a high school and state graduation requirement. This department focuses on life skills needed to succeed during and after high school. Specifically, Living On Your Own is highly recommended for graduating seniors. All Family and Consumer Science courses offer an introduction to the Health and Human Services career pathway.

HEC 121 Family Health

Prerequisite: None
Students will use skills in decision-making, goal setting and critical thinking as they learn about health and related issues. A healthy person has balance in the four areas of wellness: social, emotional, physical and intellectual health. Students will study nutrition, stress management, drug and alcohol prevention, managing emotional health, human growth and development, and consumer issues and how they relate to their own personal wellness.

Culinary Basics is for the student who enjoys cooking and/or wants to acquire a strong basic knowledge of food preparation. Emphasis will be on food preparation techniques and principles, microwave cooking, foreign and regional foods, safety and sanitation guidelines, and time management. Students will engage in such activities as group presentations, discussions, and demonstrations. As a member of this class a student will gain confidence in working cooperatively as well as independently. Not repeatable for credit.

Do you enjoy children? Plan to become a parent someday? Ever considered a career in elementary education? Working with children is one of the most challenging careers you could choose. Course topics include ages and stages of children, child nutrition and safety, major developmental theories, cultural diversity and children with special needs. You will develop skills in positive child guidance techniques needed by parents and childcare professionals. You will be placed in an elementary school to interact with children.
Students can receive 8 EvCC credits by taking this class both semesters.

As a member of this class you will participate in activities that enable you to practice effective skills to enhance your current and future relationships. You will learn more about family life in the U.S. and other cultures, which will give you greater insight into common issues that all families experience. Class topics of study include effective communication skills, the family life cycle, gender roles, alcoholism, abuse, death and dying, community resources, and other issues relating to family life.

In this course you will learn the practical “real world” skills needed for survival once you are on your own. Many times students graduate having completed even the highest level academic classes without having practiced using the many forms and resources we all need to understand for day-to-day living. A must have class for seniors! The major areas of study include career readiness, checking accounts, budgeting, credit use and abuse, laundry skills, apartment hunting, purchasing a car, food preparation, consumer skills and relationships for the future.

This course is designed to recruit junior and senior students with an interest in exploring careers in education such as teaching, coaching, or working with children from age five to 18.

This program will give you the “Total Teaching” experience. You will be placed with a mentor teacher at a local school (elementary, middle, or high school). Throughout the year, you will experience the inner-workings of the classroom, school, and district. You perform all duties; tutoring, grading, managing, and eventually teaching. You experience first-hand the preparation and training involved in being a teacher and gain the academic background to understand current issues in education. Students completing the program are better prepared to make career decisions and future plans. You must sign up for both semesters.

Students can earn 10 college credits. (Edu. 101, Educ 252, Educ 256) by taking Careers in Education

This class focuses on striving to reach your own personal best. Recognizing that reaching your personal best depends a great deal on the choices you make. This class will help you to achieve that through knowledge about proper nutrition, dieting, exercise and activities, the athlete's diet, personal and family health concerns that relate to making overall healthy decisions.
