at Lake Stevens High School are provided to assist you in selecting
your courses wisely. If, after reading the description, you have further
questions, please see your counselor. Courses that can be taken more
than one time are indicated by the asterisk. (*). This is located next
to the credit amount for each course.

All courses offered in this department satisfy the Occupational Education
graduation requirement and some may be cross-credited in other areas.
Some classes may also be articulated with Everett Community College for
dual credit.

VIA 121 / 122 Drafting 1-2 (Engineering Related)
Grade: 9,10,11,12
Length 2 semesters

Prerequisite: None
This elective course is an introduction to drafting. First semester includes:
sketching, mechanical drawing, lettering and dimensioning. Computer Aided
Drafting (CAD) is emphasized in completing the drawing assignments. This
is a challenging course that will align with many careers. Drafting is
recommended for anyone interested in technical occupations - from architecture
to visual communications and personal use. Second semester is a continuation
of first semester. Emphasis is on architecture, technical illustrations,
construction problems and other related topics.

VIA 223 Advanced Drafting 1-2

Prerequisite: 2 semesters of beginning drafting
This course is a continuation of the first year of drafting. Students
will be taught architecture, machine parts, illustration, model building
and assorted related subjects. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is emphasized.
Computer Aided Machining (CAM) is learned and related materials science
exercises included. Students will actually be machining computer drawn
parts and then produce working parts.

VIA 193 / 194 Manufacturing Technology 1-2

Do you enjoy learning about how things are made and why they are made
from certain materials? Do you enjoy working with your hands and making
things? If yes, then this is the class for you. Manufacturing Technology
offers a broad range of activities, skills and experiences designed to
provide understanding needed for success and safety as a worker and productive
citizen. First semester students will apply skills learned in class to
conduct experiments and design special projects with composite and metals.
Personal projects will include blending metals into alloys and creating
personal jewelry. Second semester students will apply skills learned in
class to conduct experiments and design special projects with polymers
and ceramics.

This course is designed to examine systems, practices and theories as
applied in the major areas of technology. The semester long course includes
topics in areas of transportation, construction, communication, and manufacturing.
Students will design and complete projects that provide hands on experience
with these subjects.

VIA 191 / 192 Principles of Technology 1-2

Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Principles of Technology introduce the concepts of physical science as
they are applied to technology in modern industry. Units of study include
force, work, rate measurements, resistance, energy and power. The course
involves extensive experimental work to illustrate the principles studied.
Classes also complete projects that provide hands-on experience with the
subjects.
The concepts of accuracy, error and instrument calibration are introduced.
The year concludes with a study of types of force transformers used in
technological apparatus. Principles of Technology supports preparation
for a technical or engineering career.

VIA 293 / 294 Principles of Technology 3-4

Prerequisite: Completion of Principles of Technology
Advanced Principles of Technology builds on concepts learned in the first
year. Topics include momentum, waves and vibrations, energy converters,
transducers, radiation, optics and optical systems and time constants.
Class activities include extensive experimental work to illustrate the
topics. Students learn math skills appropriate to these subjects as part
of the curriculum. Students design and complete projects that provide
hands-on experience with these subjects.
Completion of both years of Principles of Technology provides part of
the basis for pursuit of a technical or engineering career.

VIA 181 Horticulture 1

An introductory course on the fundamentals of horticulture. Plant identification,
propagation, greenhouse management, sales and marketing, soils, pest identification
and control, grounds care, landscape and garden design and maintenance,
career planning, leadership and personal development, floral design techniques,
floral production. Student involvement in a leadership program, FFA, is
encouraged. Classroom, greenhouses, and grounds are utilized during this
course.

VIA 182 Horticulture 2

Prerequisite: Horticulture 1 or Instructor’s permission
This course is a continuation of Horticulture 1. Emphasis is placed on
bedding plant production in the greenhouse. Greenhouse types, the horticulture
industry and plan identification are emphasized.

This course expands on the fundamental skills and knowledge from Horticulture
1 & 2. Advanced greenhouse management and production of crops, plant
identification, sales and marketing/seasonal promotions, floral design
and construction, turf management, career planning, leadership and personal
development. Membership in FFA is encouraged. Classroom, greenhouses,
and grounds are utilized during this course.

VIA 151 Small Gas Engines

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of common four-stroke
small gas engines. Topics include tool identification and use, theory
of operation of small engines and their subsystems, assembly and disassembly
techniques and measurement of two and four stroke cycle engines.
Students learn methods of evaluation of parts for wear, common shop practices
and methods for safe shop work. The course concludes with an introduction
to basic troubleshooting and diagnostic methods.

VIA 153 Small Gas Engines Advanced

Prerequisite: Small Gas Engines
The course introduces students to more in depth workings of the two and
four stroke small gas engines. They will learn how to grind values and
improve engine horsepower, and help improve on the carburetor of the small
gas engine. Students will work in teams on a class project they will design.

This course provides an introduction to the expanding world of Video communication.
Your academic, artistic and technical abilities will be challenged. Students

VIA 174 TV Production

This course provides an introduction to the world of Television Broadcasting.
The media technology classroom is a mock-up of a modern television studio
with state of the art equipment. Students will work in teams to develop
skills in “live” news casting, sports/events reporting, studio
control room operation etc.
The majority of the semester will be spent creating a student produced
daily morning news program to be viewed by the entire school.

VIA 178 Advanced Video Production

Prerequisite: Instructor Permisson and Application
This course provides the student an opportunity to expand their video
production skills while at the same time using the television-broadcasting
studio. The emphasis will be on producing stories and programs for both
the high school and the community. Students will learn advanced skills
in camera operation, writing, audio, lighting and editing. This class
will better prepare the serious student with superior knowledge and skills
to take to college or to the work force.

Screenwriting

This course introduces the students to a unique form of creative writing for film and television production and offers students the opportunity to explore an exciting career opportunity while simultaneously developing their writing skills. It also includes instruction in film technology and equipment operation. All facets of film/video production (writing, directing, editing, audio, lighting and cinematography) will betaught. During the semester, each student will be expected to write a short screenplay and work in team setting in producing a screenplay. |
