Guidance and Counseling Services


The following services are provided for all Lake Stevens High School students by the Guidance Department:

All Students:

  • Registration, scheduling, and program adjustment.
  • Parent/student conferences scheduled as requested and/or deemed necessary.
  • Administration and/or interpretation of appropriate achievement tests.
  • Course information for the following year.
    Initiation of the process for staffing of students with special education needs.
  • Personal counseling as appropriate and as available for such needs as peer/parent relationships.
  • Consultation with parents, teachers, staff, and community agencies.
  • Referral to community agencies as appropriate.
  • Information to students and parents/guardians regarding career choices and training opportunities.
  • Information, registration, and interpretation of placement, and aptitude tests including PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I, ACT, AP, etc.
  • Communication of opportunities for students to attend conferences regarding post-high school information including High School/College Conference, Career Fair, Minority College Conference, College workshops, College Admissions presentations, etc.

Freshmen/Sophomores:

    Orientation for incoming students and parents.
    Career/decision making unit in freshman classrooms and/or career center.

Juniors:

    Information to Juniors regarding post-high school planning, financial aids, pre-college testing, admissions testing, etc.

Seniors:

    Senior conferences, upon request, concerning credit and post-high school plans.
    Information regarding specific colleges and/or vocational schools, admission requirements, the application process, scholarships, financial aid.
    Senior parent night presentation regarding post-high school opportunities and financial aid.

Career Center Services

The Career Center is located in the 300 Building and is staffed by Mrs. Kim Bussian Hours: 7:10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and one evening of per month. Call Kim Bussian for time and date. Please stop by - I am here to help!

College Catalogs and Selection Information

  • Viewbooks and catalogs from state and national colleges and universities: 2-year, 4-year and technical college information.
  • Special catalog section for art, music and fashion design schools.
  • Peterson's 2-year and 4-year College Guides.
  • College Handbook by The College Board.
  • Higher Education Book by The Washington Council

College Fair

  • Every other year we plan to have a College Fair in the spring. This will give students the opportunity to meet with admission representatives from various colleges (both 2-year and 4-year), universities and technical schools. Students receive advice about choosing a college, the admission process, academic programs and financial aid.

Scholarship Information

  • Weekly updated list of available scholarships are available in the Career Center.
  • Scholarship books: latest available editions for national and local scholarship information,
  • Scholarship Search available through Peterson's, a software program installed on Career Center Computers.
  • Financial aid manuals, forms and numerous brochures.

Admission Testing Information

  • SAT I and II and ACT test registration forms available through your counselor. Test preparation software and books available in the Career Center. Test dates are posted in the Career Center. Sign up is with Mr. Norm Lowery.

College Videos and CD Offerings:

  • Many colleges and universities in video and CD format.

College Forms Available

  • Uniform applications for Washington State public colleges and universities, 2-year and 4-year available, as well as the Common Application that can be used for a number of specific schools out of state. There will also be a limited number of specific Washington college application packets available.
  • FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid forms are available in the Career Center.

Career Books

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook (latest edition)
  • Miscellaneous career-related titles.
  • Plan for Tomorrow Today. Career and educational training information for the State of Washington. Free in the Career Center.
  • Job search information: resume writing, interview skills, cover letter, etc.
  • Internships, by Peterson's

Interest Surveys

  • You can take a fun, graphical assessment called the Career Quest through the Peterson's software. You run through a series of questions, and the end result is a 15-20 page report covering the career areas that would be best suited to you.

Help

  • Help is always available in any area you could possibly have a question in. If the information is not readily available, given a day or two, I will find it for you. The Career Center is your service center, and you need to take advantage of it every chance you get!
